Week One

What is loss?

A general introduction to loss, looking wider than just loss through death. A key part of this course is the support that the students find in each other and so it is important in this first week that they get to know each other a little and start to build a sense of community and trust in which some difficult things can be shared in subsequent weeks.

Week Two

Denial

Looking at denial and shock after loss. We will explore issues of denial, what they mean and how to deal with them.

Week Three

Anger

A look at anger, frustration and irritation related to loss and how to cope with those emotions positively.

Week Four

Bargaining

Often after a loss we can struggle to find meaning, this session will look at how and why we bargain when we go through big changes and how we can start to reach out to others to tell our story.

Week Five

Depression

We will look at feelings of sadness and depression and how it affects us when we have lost someone close. We will look at warning lights and masks, how we can help ourselves and where we can go get help from others.

Week Six

Acceptance

We will look at how, in time, your loss can become part of your new reality, remembering that whilst life will never be the same again, it’s ok to make new plans and move to a place of acceptance and hope for the future.
